Thoughts have a substantial impact on what we do, how we feel, and our overall well-being. They can change how we see things, drive our behaviors, and even affect our physical health. Here’s why they are so powerful:
Thoughts Drive Emotions
Your thoughts directly influence how you view and interpret the world and your place in it. If you think positively about something, you feel good. But if you worry about it, you get anxious. For instance, if you think about doing well in a presentation, you will feel confident and enthusiastic. However, if you think you won’t do good, you’ll probably be anxious.
Thoughts Determine Behaviors
Your thought also influence your actions and decisions. Positive thoughts often lead to proactive and constructive behaviors, while negative thoughts may lead to self-sabotaging behaviors or inaction. For example, if you think you won’t succeed at something, you might procrastinate and avoid taking action. But, if you believe in yourself and your abilities, you will likely work towards achieving your goals.
Thoughts Impact Physical Health
Research has shown that our thoughts can significantly affect our physical health (more about that here). Negative thoughts can lead to chronic stress, weaken the immune system, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cause other health problems. For instance, if you’re under a lot of stress and constantly worried about your life, you may experience headaches and high blood pressure. But if you maintain a positive outlook, you are less likely to experience high stress and the physical symptoms.
Thoughts Create Reality
Thoughts lay the groundwork for your reality. What you consistently focus on and believe in tends to manifest in your life. If you stay positive and determined, you can attract opportunities that align with your aspirations. If you focus on the negative you will likely get stuck and reject opportunities for growth. For example, visualizing yourself accomplishing a goal will help you stay committed to regular practice and open to opportunities. With that practice, you will likely accomplish your goal. But if you visualize failure, you will likely not succeed or you might not even start.
Thoughts Influence Relationships
How you think also affects how you get along with others. Positive thoughts help you lead with positive intent, and curiosity. You will try to understand others better. Negative thoughts can lead to generalizations and judgements which will hinder your ability to form strong connections. For example, if you think your friends are ignoring you, you might distance yourself from them. But if you give your friends positive intent, you can talk openly about your feelings of being ignored and strengthen the relationship. If they really are ignoring you then you can walk away from a friendship that does not suit you and find friends that are a better fit.
Thoughts Determine Resilience
The way you perceive challenges and setbacks significantly affects your ability to bounce back from setbacks. Positive, resilient thoughts can create perseverance and a growth mindset. They enable you to learn from failures and continue striving toward our goals. A limited or fixed mindset will keep you stuck. For example, If you see a difficult project as a chance to learn and grow, you’ll be more determined to overcome obstacles and succeed. But if you think a challenging project is a daunting burden, then you will probably drag your feet, not complete it and feel like a failure.
